The Lord in the Heart

Bhagavad Gita 18.61

Meaning · English

The Supreme Lord dwells in the hearts of all living beings, Arjun, causing all beings to wander, as if seated on a machine made of the material energy.

Krishna uses three words that carry the weight. Ishvara is the Lord, from a root sense of one who rules. Hrit-desha is the region of the heart, the inner place of every living being, not a temple somewhere else. Maya is the material energy, the stuff and pull of nature that body, mind and habit are made of. Yantra is a machine, and beings sit on it like riders carried round on a contraption. Krishna tells Arjuna that the Lord lives in every creature's heart, while creatures, riding this machine, are made to circle and wander from one pull to the next. The reason is close at hand. Arjuna has just said he will not fight, and Krishna has answered that nature will move him anyway. Here he says what lies underneath: the turning does not happen on its own, and the one who dwells within is present in it. Shankara reads the Lord as the inner ruler who moves beings through maya as a puppeteer moves figures. Ramanuja reads him as the indweller who directs while beings act through their own bodies and past deeds. Madhva reads it as the complete dependence of every being on the Lord within. Krishna asks Arjuna to stop treating his refusal as a free, proud decision and to see where his motion really comes from.

At a fairground carousel, each child holds a painted horse and feels the ride is theirs, rising, falling, going round. Under the floor a motor they never see turns the whole platform. The riders are the beings, the platform is the machine of nature, and the hidden motor at the centre is the Lord in the heart.

1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one thing you did today almost without choosing: a snap, a scroll, a second helping. 2. For each, ask quietly what pulled you, and write the answer in one line. 3. Tomorrow, when the same pull comes, stop for three breaths with a hand on your chest before acting. 4. Notice whether the pull loosens even a little, and keep that to yourself, without scoring it.

A woman is at the stove, tired, and hears herself snap at her daughter in exactly the tone her own mother used. She promised herself she never would. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna's teaching is that she is carried by something larger than a decision, a machine of nature she rides on, and that the Lord sits in her own heart even as it turns. Step by step, it changes the moment. First, the snap is seen as a motion that arrived, not as proof of what she is. Second, the shame has less to feed on, so there is room to say sorry plainly. Third, she turns toward the one within, and not only toward self-blame. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness, hunger and old habit push words out before thought arrives. The verse does not promise the habit will vanish by tomorrow, and it does not remove the daughter's hurt or replace help where a family is struggling in earnest.
