Complete Refuge, Lasting Peace

Bhagavad Gita 18.62

Meaning · English

Take refuge in him alone, with your whole being, Arjun, son of Bharat. By his grace you will reach the supreme peace, the abode that never ends.

Three words carry it. Sharana is refuge, the roof you run under when the weather turns. Sarva-bhava is every state of being at once: thought, feeling, will and effort, with no private reserve held back. Prasada is grace, a gift that settles on a person and is not a wage earned. Krishna tells Arjuna to go to that one alone, the Lord just described as present within all beings, and to go with all of himself. Then, by that grace, Arjuna will reach supreme peace and a dwelling that does not pass away. The problem sits just before it: a man who sees what is right and still acts against his own wish is divided, and effort alone has not healed him. Krishna offers no new method. He points to a place of rest, and he names the peace as something received, not produced. Shankara reads the one taken refuge in as Ishvara, the Lord within, and the peace as liberation. Ramanuja reads it as total self-giving to Narayana, with the abode as his own supreme realm. Madhva stresses surrender joined with knowing the Lord as supreme and distinct from the soul, with grace as what grants release.

A tired swimmer thrashes against the current and sinks a little with every stroke. Then she lies back, spreads her arms, and lets the water hold her. The water was always able to carry her; she only had to stop fighting it. Full surrender is that lying back, and grace is the water.

1. Tonight, pick one outcome you have been gripping hard, such as a result, a reply, or a family decision. 2. Write one line naming the part that is truly yours to do, and do it, or set it for tomorrow. 3. Sit for two minutes and hand the rest over in a single sentence, to God or to whatever is greater than you. 4. Notice your jaw, shoulders and breath before and after. Repeat each evening this week.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her son is in surgery. She has called the surgeon, signed the forms, and answered every question. Now she grips her phone, rehearses the worst, and her whole body is clenched around something she cannot touch. Krishna's words to Arjuna would change this in steps. First, she separates what was hers to do from what was never in her hands. Second, she gives the rest over completely, to God as she knows him, without keeping a quiet backup of worry. Third, she lets her shoulders drop and her breathing slow, and she waits as someone held, not as someone on guard. Ordinary experience confirms that a body kept braced for hours only wears itself out. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise that the surgery goes well, or that fear never returns, and it does not replace the surgeon. It promises peace as a gift of grace, and says nothing about the outcome.
