Meaning · English
Thus I have told you this knowledge, more secret than any secret. Ponder it fully, leaving nothing out. Then, as you wish, so act.
Three words carry the verse. Jnana is knowledge, here the whole teaching Krishna has given across the Gita. Guhya is a secret, something kept covered. Guhyatara is a secret deeper than that, so Krishna is saying this teaching is a secret within a secret. The plain sense is that the teaching is finished and he has told Arjuna all of it. He then asks Arjuna to ponder it completely, and the word for pondering means weighing it up and looking at every side. After that, he says, do as you wish. Krishna gives the reason by what he does: he does not order Arjuna into the battle or into surrender. Arjuna has been bewildered since the first chapter, and an answer he has examined for himself will hold when one he was merely handed would break. What the verse asks of the listener is slow, honest thought, with no clause skipped, and then a choice that is truly his own. Shankara reads the knowledge as the teaching that leads to liberation, which Arjuna is to reflect on and then act upon. Ramanuja reads it as the teaching of devotion and surrender. Madhva reads it as knowledge of the Lord's supremacy, which reflection makes certain.
A teacher hands a student a finished map, then folds her own hands and steps back from the road. The map is the whole teaching, the folded hands are the freedom Krishna leaves, and the student's own feet must walk the road after she has studied every turn.
1. Choose one decision you have been putting off, and tonight sit with it for ten minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write down everything you have been told about it by others, then everything you yourself believe, side by side. 3. Read both columns through to the end without skipping the uncomfortable lines. 4. Notice which choice you feel able to stand behind, and take one small step toward it before the week is out.
A farmer stands at the edge of his field with a buyer's offer in his pocket. His brothers say sell, his wife says keep it, and the loan is due. He wants someone to just tell him. Krishna's closing words to Arjuna speak to that moment. First, the farmer lays out what he actually knows: the price, the debt, what the land gives each year, what each person fears. Second, he takes the whole picture in, including the parts he would rather skip, such as the cost of waiting. Third, he chooses, and the choice is his, so he cannot later hand the blame to anyone else. Ordinary experience confirms that a decision made after looking at everything is easier to live with than one made in a hurry or on someone else's say-so. The verse does not promise that the choice will turn out well, and it does not take away the worry or the loss if the harvest fails. Where the matter is legal, medical or financial, it does not replace advice from someone who knows the field.
