The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18 · Surrender

Said Because You're Dear

Bhagavad Gita 18.64

Meaning · English

Hear again my supreme word, the most hidden of all. You are very dear to me, and so I will tell you what is for your good.

Three words carry the verse. Guhya means hidden, a thing kept back. Sarva-guhya-tama stacks the idea: the most hidden of all hidden things. Hita means benefit, what is truly good for someone, not what pleases them. And drdham, very or firmly, says how dear Arjuna is to Krishna. Krishna asks Arjuna to listen once more. He has already given the teaching, and he says plainly he is about to give its most hidden part. The reason he gives is not Arjuna's rank or merit. It is affection: because Arjuna is dear, Krishna speaks for Arjuna's good. So the teaching comes as a gift from a friend, not an order from a superior. It asks the listener to hear it with that trust, and to hear it again, since the hidden part is easy to miss the first time. Shankara reads this as a closing, most concentrated statement of the whole teaching. Ramanuja stresses the love between Lord and devotee, and takes the dearness as the ground of the instruction. Madhva likewise reads the dearness as Krishna's own favour toward his devotee.

A grandmother waits until the guests have gone and the dishes are put away. Then she calls her grandchild into the kitchen and shows the one step in the recipe she never says aloud. The quiet hour is the hidden teaching; her reason for sharing it is love.

1. Choose one piece of advice someone gave you that you brushed aside. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall it. 2. Ask yourself whether it was given out of care for you, and write one line answering that. 3. If it was, listen to it again tomorrow, fully, without answering back. Notice what you hear the second time that you missed the first.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his father's doctor explains the next treatment. He nods, but hears little after the first sentence. Later he cannot say what was decided. The verse speaks to that moment in a few steps. Krishna asks for a second hearing, so the man can ask the doctor to say it again and write it down. Krishna says the words come from care, so the man can listen for what is meant for his father's good, not only for the frightening parts. And Krishna calls it a teaching meant to help, so the man can take it in as help. Ordinary experience confirms that people under strain take in very little the first time and more on a calm repeat. The verse does not promise the news will be good, and it does not replace the doctor's advice; it speaks about how to listen, not about what the illness will do.
