Meaning · English
Fix your mind on me. Be my devotee. Worship me. Bow to me. You will come to me alone, truly. I promise you this, because you are dear to me.
Krishna gives Arjuna four short instructions, then a promise. The first is mat-manah: a mind that has me in it. Manas is the thinking mind, the one that runs all day, so Krishna asks that its running have him in it. The second is bhakta, a devotee, from bhaj, to share in, to belong to. It names a relationship, not a performance. The third is yaji, one who worships, from yaj, to offer. The fourth is namaskuru: bow, offer obeisance, the body and pride lowered together. Then the promise: you will come to me. Krishna adds satyam, truly, and pratijane, I promise. Gita readers rarely see him promise outright; here he does. The reason is the last clause: you are dear to me. The promise rests on love, not on Arjuna's merit. The verse asks for thought, feeling, offering and humility, all turned one way. Shankara reads the arrival as knowledge of the self that is Krishna. Ramanuja reads it as devotion that ends in reaching Krishna himself. Madhva stresses lasting devotion to a God who stays distinct from the devotee. Each takes the promise as sure.
A compass needle shakes when you carry it, but it settles and points the same way every time you stop moving. Thought, devotion, offering and bowing are the settling. The needle's north is Krishna, and the promise is that a needle pointing steadily will arrive.
1. Pick one ordinary daily act, such as the first cup of tea or washing your hands before a meal. 2. Before it, pause for ten seconds and bring Krishna to mind, by name or by picture. 3. Offer the act silently to him, then do it slowly. 4. At night, note whether that act felt any different from the others. Repeat for a week.
A mother sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her son is in surgery. Her mind loops through every worst case, and her hands will not stay still. The verse offers her a place to put the loop. She says his name, or Krishna's, and holds one thought in her mind instead of ten. She folds her hands and bows slightly, a small act the body can do when the head cannot. She hands the worry over as an offering, not a plan. Ordinary experience confirms that a settled posture and a single repeated thought can slow a racing mind. What the verse does not promise in that corridor is a good outcome for the surgery, or an end to fear. The promise is about arriving at Krishna, in the text's own terms, not about the doctors' result. The doctors still do their work, and she still needs food and rest.
