Let Go, Then Take Shelter

Bhagavad Gita 18.66

Meaning · English

Abandoning all varieties of dharma, take refuge in me alone. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

Three words carry the verse. Dharma means duty, the rule you live by, what holds a life together. Sharana means shelter, a roof you run under when the storm breaks. Papa means a wrong deed and the weight it leaves behind. Krishna tells Arjuna to put down every kind of dharma, every list of what must be done, and to take shelter in him alone. Then he makes a promise: he will free Arjuna from all the weight of wrongs. The reason is Arjuna's fear. He has been afraid all along that acting, or failing to act, will stain him. Krishna answers the fear itself and ends with a plain command: do not fear. What it asks of the listener is a change of where he stands. Security rests on Krishna, not on getting every duty right. Shankara reads the abandoning as giving up the sense of being the doer, and the refuge as knowledge of the one self. Ramanuja reads it as surrender, prapatti, where Krishna himself takes over the burden of the means. Madhva reads it as devotion to Vishnu as the supreme, with duties kept but no longer leaned on.

A child on a crowded station platform grips a bag of rules her mother gave her: hold the rail, count the stops, ask no stranger. Then the mother appears, and the child drops the bag to catch her hand. The rules were real, but the hand is what keeps her safe. The bag is dharma; the hand is refuge.

1. Tonight, write on paper the three duties that weigh on you most, one line each. 2. Beside each, write what you fear will happen if you get it wrong. 3. Sit for two minutes and hand the list over to whatever you trust most, in your own words. Say: I will do my part, and I rest on you. 4. Tomorrow, notice whether one task feels lighter to begin, even slightly.

A father stands outside an exam hall while his daughter sits her board paper. He has spent weeks checking her timetable, her meals, her sleep, and now there is nothing left to check. His chest is tight, his phone is in his hand, and he keeps rehearsing what he might have done differently. Krishna's words would change that moment in steps. First, the father admits the checking is finished; his duties have been done as well as he could. Second, he stops asking whether he failed her and names what he is really afraid of. Third, he places that fear in Krishna's keeping, as Arjuna is told to, and lets his breath slow. Ordinary experience confirms that a body clenched with dread rests badly and thinks poorly. The verse does not promise a good result in the paper, and it does not take away a father's love or worry. Where real anxiety lasts for weeks or disturbs sleep, a doctor is the right person to see.
