Who Should Not Hear This

Bhagavad Gita 18.67

Meaning · English

This teaching is never to be spoken to one who lacks austerity, nor to one who lacks devotion, nor at any time to one unwilling to listen, nor to one who envies me.

Krishna names four kinds of listener who are not ready for the teaching he has just given. The first lacks tapas, which comes from a root meaning heat: the steady effort and self-discipline that burns off laziness. The second lacks bhakti, devotion, a loving attachment to him. The third is ashushrushu, someone with no wish to listen, whose ears are closed to spiritual talk. The fourth is the one who abhyasuyati, who finds fault with Krishna and is envious of him. The word for never, kadachana, means not at any time, so the warning is not softened by circumstance. The plain sense is that the teaching has to be given with care. It is the closing counsel of the whole Gita, and Krishna sets a limit on who receives it. His reason is that it falls on the wrong ground with these four: the careless treat it lightly, the unwilling hear nothing, the envious twist it into an attack. Krishna asks Arjuna to be a careful speaker and to notice who is actually listening. Shankara reads the verse as guidance on who qualifies to receive this knowledge. Ramanuja stresses devotion as the fitness that matters most. Madhva reads the envious as those who deny Krishna's supremacy.

A seed packet says to plant in loosened, watered soil. Thrown on a paved road, the same seed lies there and is eaten or crushed. The teaching is the seed, and the four kinds of listener are the hard ground where nothing can root.

1. Today, before you explain something you care about to someone, ask yourself whether they have asked, or are curious. 2. If they are not, say nothing for now and wait for a better moment. Notice the urge to speak anyway. 3. When someone does ask, give them your full attention for a few minutes and answer only what they asked.

A grandmother has just found peace through her morning prayer, and at dinner she tells her teenage grandson he should try it. He rolls his eyes, says it is nonsense, and the room goes cold. She feels hurt and pushes harder. Krishna's counsel would change that moment in steps. She would first notice that he has not asked, and that he is tired and defensive. She would let the remark pass and keep her own practice steady, so he can see it. Later, if he asks why she is calm, she answers briefly and honestly. Ordinary experience confirms that advice offered to a closed listener tends to harden him. The verse does not promise that he will ever come round, and it does not say who is permanently unfit. It does not mend the hurt of being dismissed, and it does not remove her wish to share what has helped her.
