Teaching It Onward
Bhagavad Gita 18.68
Meaning · English
Whoever teaches this most confidential knowledge among my devotees, offering the highest love to me, will come to me alone, without any doubt.
Three words carry the weight. Guhya means hidden, kept close, the way a family keeps its most private matters. Bhakti means love that serves, a devotion that acts. Para means beyond the ordinary, so the love Krishna names is the highest kind, not a passing warmth. Krishna tells Arjuna that anyone who passes on this closely held teaching among those who love him, and does it as an act of that highest love, will reach him. He adds that there is no doubt in it. The reason sits in the verses just before: Krishna has said the teaching is not for everyone, so he now names who may carry it and how. The teacher is not praised for cleverness. What counts is that the teaching is given as love toward Krishna, to people already turned toward him. What he asks of the listener is to hold the teaching with that same love and share it where it will be received. Ramanuja reads the verse as naming devotion itself as the means by which the teacher arrives. Shankara takes the teaching as knowledge that the teacher helps others reach, and so a path to liberation. Madhva stresses that the devotion is directed to a personal God, and that the teacher reaches him by his grace.
A lamp is lit from another lamp on a festival evening. The first flame loses nothing, and the lit wick carries the light into the next doorway. The teacher is the lamp passing flame, the teaching is the light, and love for Krishna is the steady hand that carries it across without letting it go out.
1. Pick one line of the Gita that has stayed with you, and write it on a slip of paper this morning. 2. This week, tell it to one person who would welcome it, a friend or relative who already cares about such things. Take about five minutes. 3. Before you speak, silently offer the telling to Krishna, and then speak plainly, without arguing. 4. Afterward, notice whether you wanted to be admired or simply wanted to give it.
A grandmother sits on a cot in the evening with her ten-year-old grandson, who has come home upset after losing a game. She does not give a speech. She tells him something her own mother once told her, slowly, and he listens because he trusts her. Krishna's verse speaks to that moment. First, the one who passes on something she holds dear has to know it well enough to say it simply. Second, the telling goes to someone ready to hear it, not pressed on a crowd. Third, the telling is an act of love, so the teacher's attention stays on the listener, not on being right. Ordinary experience agrees that what we explain aloud to another person becomes clearer to us, and that people receive words better from someone who plainly cares for them. The verse's promise that the teacher comes to Krishna without doubt is the text's own teaching about devotion and its reward. It does not promise that the boy will feel better tonight, that the listener will agree, or that grief and disappointment will vanish because something wise was said.
