Where Victory Stands

Meaning · English
Wherever Krishna, the Lord of Yog, is present, and wherever Arjun, son of Pritha, the supreme archer, stands, there are opulence, victory, prosperity and unending righteousness. That is my opinion.
Sanjaya closes with a judgment, and he calls it his own: that is my opinion. He names two figures. Yogeshvara means lord of yog, the one who holds the means of union and action. Dhanur-dhara means bearer of the bow, the archer who does the work. Sanjaya says that where these two stand together, four things follow. Shri is opulence, a flourishing of resources. Vijaya is victory. Bhuti is prosperity, things growing well. Niti is righteousness, right conduct, and it is called dhruva, which means fixed and unwavering. Notice that righteousness sits in the list beside victory, so the success he sees is not won by crooked means. His reason comes from the two preceding verses: he has heard the whole dialogue and seen the cosmic form, and he trusts what he witnessed. Guidance and effort, joined, are for him the full picture. Tradition reads the line in different ways. Shankara takes it as the closing assurance that success belongs where the Lord's teaching and the one who acts on it come together. Ramanuja stresses Krishna as the supreme person on whom Arjun's victory rests. Madhva stresses Krishna's supremacy as the source of every success the Pandavas have.
A tandem bicycle on a long road. The rider in front steers and sees the road ahead, and the rider behind pedals hard. Neither alone gets far. Krishna is the steering, Arjun is the pedalling, and Sanjaya says the journey ends well when both are on the seat together.
1. Tonight, pick one task for tomorrow that you have been dreading, and write it on a slip of paper. 2. Next to it, write the name of one person or one book whose guidance you trust on that kind of task. 3. Tomorrow, before starting, spend two minutes with that guidance: ask the person, or read one page. 4. Then do the task for twenty minutes yourself. Afterwards, notice whether the work felt steadier with guidance beside it.
A shopkeeper's daughter takes over the till on her first morning. Her father sits on a stool at the back, saying nothing. A customer disputes a price, and her hands go cold. She glances back, he nods once, and she answers the customer calmly. Sanjaya's view, as his own, is that good outcomes live where steady guidance and willing effort meet. In that moment the verse changes three things. She does not wait for the guide to act for her. She does not act as if she had no guide. And she keeps the fair price, not the quick one, because righteousness is in Sanjaya's list beside victory. Ordinary experience confirms the small part of this: a calm presence nearby makes a shaky beginner steadier. What the verse does not promise is that the sale will go well, that the shop will thrive, or that nothing will be lost. It is one witness's opinion, spoken after what he saw, and not a guarantee for every person who tries.
