Duties Follow Nature
Bhagavad Gita 18.41
Meaning · English
Of the priestly class, the warrior and administrative class, the mercantile and farming class, and the worker class, Arjun, subduer of enemies, the duties are distributed according to work based on one's nature and the guṇas.
Krishna names four groups: the priestly class, the warrior and administrative class, the mercantile and farming class, and the worker class. Then he says what is shared out among them: karma, which here means duties, the work that falls to a person. The word for distributed means divided into portions, so each group holds its own share. The reason he gives sits in two words. Svabhava is one's own nature, what a person carries in and leans toward. Guna is a strand of nature, and the Gita counts three, each pulling people toward a different kind of work. So duties are not handed out at random. They follow from what a person is made of. Arjun is addressed as subduer of enemies, and he is the one hesitating at the edge of a battle. Krishna answers his doubt about what is truly his to do by pointing to nature, not to wish or fear. The listener is asked to look at their own make-up before judging a task. Shankara reads the division as rooted in the gunas, with scripture setting out each class's duties. Ramanuja reads each duty as service offered to the Lord. Madhva stresses the inborn qualities of the soul as fixing the work that suits it. The words themselves name nature and gunas, not birth.
A kitchen drawer holds a ladle, a knife, a sieve and a rolling pin. Each is shaped for one job, and none is lesser for it. A sieve cannot carry soup, and a ladle cannot flatten dough. In the same way, each person's work is meant to match the shape of who they are.
1. Tonight, write down three tasks from this week that left you feeling steady, even if tired, and three that left you drained. 2. Beside each, note in a few words what the task asked of you: patience, courage, counting, caring, making. 3. Over the next few days, watch which kind of work you drift toward when nobody is asking. 4. Keep the list on a page you will see again on Sunday.
A young woman of twenty-two sits at the dinner table. Her father has found her a bank job, safe and respectable. All her life, though, neighbours have knocked on her door when a fan stops or a phone screen cracks. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First, the question shifts from which work is respectable to which work fits how she is made. Second, she can look at her own record: what she does without being asked, and what leaves her tired in a good way. Third, she can weigh the offer against that record, and speak to her father from it instead of from guilt or defiance. Ordinary experience confirms that work against the grain wears a person down faster than work with it. The verse does not promise that a fitting job exists, that it pays well, or that her father will agree. It does not settle the choice for her. It gives her a place from which to start looking.
