The Charioteer's Two Hands
Gita Dhyanam 3
Meaning · English
Salutations to Krishna: wish-granting tree to those who take refuge, whip and staff in one hand, the other held in the sign of knowledge, milker of the Gita's nectar.
Four pictures of Krishna sit side by side. To anyone who turns to him for shelter, he is like the heavenly tree said to give whatever is asked of it. In one hand he holds the whip and staff a charioteer uses to drive his horses. The other hand makes the teaching sign, thumb and forefinger joined. And he is the one who draws the Gita out, the way milk is drawn, so its nectar can be shared.
Picture a father driving with his child beside him: one hand on the wheel, the other pointing out turns and naming streets as they pass. Guiding the journey and teaching about it happen in the same seat. Krishna's two hands work like that: whip and staff to drive the chariot, the sign of knowledge to teach the one riding.
