Vyasa Lights the Lamp
Gita Dhyanam 2
Meaning · English
Salutation to you, Vyasa, wide of mind, eyes long as open lotus petals, you who lit the lamp of knowledge, filled with the oil of the Bharata.
The hymn turns from the book to the man who set it down. Vyasa gets a bow and two pieces of praise. His mind is wide, wide enough to hold a whole epic. His eyes are long, like the petals of a lotus fully opened, an old way of describing a calm, beautiful face. Then the reason for the bow: he lit a lamp. The lamp is made of knowledge. The oil filling it is the Bharata, the great epic.
Picture a clay oil lamp at dusk. Most of it is the bowl of oil, heavy and dark. The flame is small, but it is the reason anyone fills the bowl. Someone has to strike the match. The long epic is that oil, the knowledge it feeds is the flame, and Vyasa is the hand that lit it.
