Gita Dhyanam 5

वसुदेवसुतं देवं कंसचाणूरमर्दनम् । देवकीपरमानंदं कृष्णं वंदे जगद्गुरुम्

Meaning · English

I bow to Krishna, the shining one, son of Vasudeva, who crushed Kamsa and Chanura, the highest joy of Devaki, teacher of the whole world.

The hymn gives Krishna a short list of titles and then bows. He is shining, a word used for gods. He is Vasudeva's son, so he has a father and a family. He brought down Kamsa and Chanura, two strong opponents. He is Devaki's greatest happiness, the delight a mother takes in her child. The last title is the one the rest lead to: teacher of the world. The son, the fighter and the beloved child are the same person who taught the Gita.

Picture a schoolteacher at a family wedding. Her father introduces her as his daughter. An old neighbour recalls how she stood up to the street bully. Her mother simply beams. Then a grown man walks over and says she taught him to read. Each greeting is true, but the last one says what she gave the world.

मैं वसुदेव के पुत्र, उन प्रकाशमान कृष्ण को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन्होंने कंस और चाणूर का मर्दन किया, जो देवकी का परम आनंद हैं और सारे जगत के गुरु हैं।

स्तोत्र कृष्ण को उपाधियों की एक छोटी-सी सूची देता है और फिर प्रणाम करता है। वे प्रकाशमान हैं, और यह शब्द देवताओं के लिए आता है। वे वसुदेव के पुत्र हैं, यानी उनके पिता हैं, उनका परिवार है। उन्होंने कंस और चाणूर जैसे दो बलवान विरोधियों को धराशायी किया। वे देवकी का सबसे बड़ा सुख हैं, वह आनंद जो माँ को अपनी संतान में मिलता है। अंतिम उपाधि वह है जिस तक बाकी सब ले जाती हैं: जगत के गुरु। पुत्र, योद्धा और प्यारी संतान, ये सब वही एक व्यक्ति हैं जिन्होंने गीता का उपदेश दिया।

किसी पारिवारिक विवाह में एक अध्यापिका की कल्पना कीजिए। उसके पिता उसे अपनी बेटी कहकर मिलवाते हैं। एक बूढ़े पड़ोसी याद करते हैं कि वह कैसे गली के दबंग के सामने डटकर खड़ी हुई थी। उसकी माँ बस खिली-खिली मुस्कराती रहती है। फिर एक प्रौढ़ व्यक्ति पास आकर कहता है कि इन्होंने ही मुझे पढ़ना सिखाया था। हर परिचय सच्चा है, पर अंतिम परिचय बताता है कि उसने संसार को क्या दिया।
