The battle was a river: Bhishma and Drona its banks, Karna its crashing waves, Duryodhana its whirlpool, warriors its sharks and currents. The Pandavas crossed it, Keshava their ferryman.
Each name is a warrior on the Kaurava side, fitted into one picture. Bhishma and Drona, the two great elders, are the high banks. Jayadratha is the water, the Gandhara king a blue lotus on it, Shalya a shark, Kripa the current, Karna the waves crashing on the shore. Ashvatthama and Vikarna are the dreadful sea-beasts, Duryodhana the whirlpool that pulls everything in. Every danger is counted. Then the line turns: the Pandavas did cross, because Keshava, Krishna, was their boatman.
A parent walks a small child across a crowded junction. Buses, scooters, a truck swinging round the corner. The child cannot read the traffic or judge the gaps. It holds one hand and steps when that hand moves. The danger is real, and the child still reaches the far side. So the Pandavas crossed, with Keshava leading.

युद्ध एक नदी था: भीष्म और द्रोण उसके तट, कर्ण उसकी उफनती लहरें, दुर्योधन उसका भँवर, योद्धा उसके ग्राह और धाराएँ; पांडव उसे पार कर गए, केशव उनके खेवनहार थे।
हर नाम कौरव पक्ष का एक योद्धा है, जिसे एक ही चित्र में पिरोया गया है। भीष्म और द्रोण, दोनों महान वयोवृद्ध, ऊँचे तट हैं। जयद्रथ जल है, गांधार का राजा उस पर खिला नीला कमल, शल्य ग्राह, कृप धारा, और कर्ण किनारे से टकराती लहरें। अश्वत्थामा और विकर्ण भयंकर जल-जंतु हैं, दुर्योधन वह भँवर जो सब कुछ अपने भीतर खींच लेता है। हर संकट गिना गया है। फिर पंक्ति मुड़ती है: पांडव सचमुच पार हुए, क्योंकि केशव, कृष्ण, उनके नाविक थे।
कोई अभिभावक एक छोटे बच्चे को भीड़ भरे चौराहे के पार ले जाता है। बसें, स्कूटर, मोड़ पर घूमता हुआ एक ट्रक। बच्चा न यातायात समझ पाता है, न बीच की खाली जगहें आँक पाता है। वह बस एक हाथ थामे रहता है और जब वह हाथ बढ़ता है, तभी कदम बढ़ाता है। संकट सच्चा है, फिर भी बच्चा उस पार पहुँच जाता है। इसी तरह पांडव भी पार हुए, केशव की अगुवाई में।
