Whose End None Knows
Gita Dhyanam 9
Meaning · English
Brahma, Varuna, Indra, Rudra and the Maruts praise him; Sama singers chant him; yogis see him in stilled minds; no god or demon finds his end. I bow to him.
Three ways of approaching him line up, then a limit. Gods like Brahma, Varuna, Indra, Rudra and the storm-gods called the Maruts praise him in heavenly hymns. The singers of the Sama Veda chant him through the Vedic tradition: its supporting sciences, its word-by-word and step-by-step recitations, its Upanishads. Yogis, their minds settled in meditation and turned toward him, see him. Yet the crowds of gods and demons do not know where he ends. The hymn closes by bowing to that God.
Picture a beach in the morning. Children splash in the shallows, fishermen sing while they haul their nets, and someone sits quietly watching the water. Each of them really knows the sea. None of them can point to where it ends. Praise, chanting and meditation are like that: each one truly touches God, and none of them reaches his far edge.
