Mute Speaks, Lame Climbs

Gita Dhyanam 8

Meaning · English

I bow to Madhava, the highest joy, whose grace makes the mute speak freely and lets the lame cross over a mountain.

Two people are shown doing the very thing they cannot do. Someone who cannot speak becomes talkative, not just able to get out one word. Someone who cannot walk gets over a mountain, not just across a room. Neither one earns it by trying harder. It comes from grace, a kindness freely given. The singer bows to the one who gives it, Madhava, a name of Krishna, and calls him the highest joy. The size of the gap is the size of the grace.

A toddler who cannot reach the counter is lifted onto a parent's hip and suddenly sees the whole kitchen. The child did not grow taller. Someone picked them up. The mute speaker and the lame climber are like that: the height comes from the arms holding them, not from their own legs.
