Stringing Rudra's Bow

अहं रुद्राय धनुरा तनोमि ब्रह्मद्विषे शरवे हन्तवा उ। अहं जनाय समदं कृणोम्यहं द्यावापृथिवी आ विवेश

Meaning · English

I string the bow for Rudra, so his arrow strikes down the one who hates prayer. I stir up the contest for the people. I have entered heaven and earth.

Rudra is the fierce archer among the Vedic gods, the one whose arrows are feared. Speech says she is the one who strings his bow, so the force behind his shot is hers. His target is the person who hates the sacred word, the prayer spoken in worship. Sāyaṇa reads this as one who hates the Brahmins. She also sets up the contest for people, the clash in which they win or lose. Then she widens the claim: she has entered heaven and earth, and she fills both.

Before a play begins, a stagehand tightens the ropes, sets the lights and checks every cue. The audience watches only the actors, and nothing moves without that unseen work. Speech stands behind the god's strike and the people's struggle in the same way. She makes ready what others are seen to do.

मैं रुद्र के लिए धनुष पर डोरी चढ़ाती हूँ, ताकि उसका बाण प्रार्थना से द्वेष करने वाले को मार गिराए। मैं लोगों के लिए संघर्ष जगाती हूँ। मैंने स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी में प्रवेश किया है।
