The One She Chooses

Rig Veda 10.125.5

अहमेव स्वयमिदं वदामि जुष्टं देवेभिरुत मानुषेभिः। यं कामये तंतमुग्रं कृणोमि तं ब्रह्माणं तमृषिं तं सुमेधाम्

Meaning · English

I myself speak this, welcomed by gods and humans alike. Whoever I choose, that one I make mighty: a priest, a seer, a person of keen mind.

Speech says the words she utters come from herself; no one hands them to her. Gods and people alike take delight in what she says. Then she names her freedom: she picks whom she will. The one she picks becomes mighty. That person becomes a priest, one who can shape the sacred word; Sāyaṇa reads this as a maker, one who creates. That person becomes a seer, who sees what the eyes miss, and someone whose understanding is clear. All four gifts come from her choice.

A singer at a village gathering hands the microphone to one person in the crowd. For that moment the stranger's voice fills the room, and everyone listens. The voice was always theirs, but its reach came from the hand that passed it. Speech works this way: her choosing gives a person strength, sight and a clear mind.

मैं स्वयं यह कहती हूँ, जिसका देवता और मनुष्य समान रूप से स्वागत करते हैं; जिसे मैं चुनती हूँ, उसे मैं शक्तिशाली बनाती हूँ: पुरोहित, ऋषि, तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि वाला व्यक्ति।

वाणी कहती है कि जो शब्द वह बोलती है, वे उसी से आते हैं; उन्हें कोई उसे सौंपता नहीं। देवता और मनुष्य समान रूप से उसके कहे में आनंद पाते हैं। फिर वह अपनी स्वतंत्रता बताती है: वह जिसे चाहे, उसे चुनती है। जिसे वह चुनती है, वह शक्तिशाली हो जाता है। वह व्यक्ति पुरोहित बनता है, जो पवित्र वचन को गढ़ सकता है; सायण इसे रचयिता के अर्थ में पढ़ते हैं, जो सृजन करता है। वह व्यक्ति ऋषि बनता है, जो वह देखता है जो आँखों से छूट जाता है, और ऐसा व्यक्ति बनता है जिसकी समझ निर्मल है। ये चारों वरदान उसके चुनाव से आते हैं।
