Meaning · English

Through me each one eats food, sees, breathes, hears what is spoken. Those who give me no thought still live beside me. Listen, famed one: I speak what deserves trust.

Vak names four plain acts: eating, seeing, breathing, and hearing words spoken. None of them happens apart from her. She is the power at work inside whoever eats or listens. People who never think of her are not shut out. They live close beside her all the same. Sāyaṇa reads that phrase differently, as 'they waste away', cut off because they do not know her. She then turns to one listener, called 'the renowned', and says that what follows deserves faith. It is reached by trust, not by argument.

A lamp, a fan and a radio run all evening in a house. Nobody in the room thinks about the wiring inside the walls, yet nothing would glow, turn or sound without it. Vak is that hidden current. She runs inside every act of eating, seeing, breathing and hearing, whether or not anyone gives her a thought.
