Sovereign Present Everywhere

Rig Veda 10.125.3

Meaning · English

I am the sovereign, who draws riches together, the knowing one, first of those owed worship. The gods set me in many places, standing widely, entering into many.

Speech names herself the sovereign, the one who rules a realm. Sāyaṇa widens that realm to the whole world. She draws riches together and carries them to those who worship her. She is the knowing one, and so she is first among all who receive offerings. Sāyaṇa takes her knowing as having seen the highest reality as her own self. For this reason the gods set her down everywhere. She stands spread out as the many things of the world, and she enters many beings as the life within them.

Think of the water main under a town. One supply enters every house. It rises from a kitchen tap here, fills a kettle there, and runs through a garden hose. Each house calls it its own water. Speech describes herself the same way: one presence, set in many places, entering each being and working there under many names.
