Bearer of Wealth to Worshippers
Rig Veda 10.125.2
Meaning · English
I carry Soma, the pressed one; I carry Tvastr, Pushan and Bhaga. I set wealth upon the one who brings offerings, who serves the gods well, who presses Soma.
Speech names more gods she carries. Soma is the plant crushed for the sacred drink, and the god present in it. Sāyaṇa reads its epithet as 'to be pressed', while others take it as 'swelling'. Tvastr is the craftsman who shapes forms, Pushan the guardian of roads and herds, and Bhaga the giver of each one's share. Then she turns to people. The one who brings offerings, tends the gods with care and presses Soma receives wealth, and she is the one who places it there.
A porter at a crowded railway station carries several bags at once, on her head and both shoulders, each belonging to a different traveller. When one traveller steps forward with his ticket, she sets a bag down in front of him. Speech holds the gods up in the same way, and she sets wealth down before the person who offers.
