Speech Among the Gods

Rig Veda 10.125.1

अहं रुद्रेभिर्वसुभिश्चराम्यहमादित्यैरुत विश्वदेवैः। अहं मित्रावरुणोभा बिभर्म्यहमिन्द्राग्नी अहमश्विनोभा

Meaning · English

I move with the Rudras and the Vasus, I move with the Adityas and all the gods. I carry both Mitra and Varuna, Indra and Agni, and both Ashvins.

Speech herself is talking. She says she moves with every company of gods: the Rudras of the storm, the bright Vasus, the Adityas who are sons of Aditi, and all the gods together. Then she names those she carries: Mitra and Varuna, keepers of agreement and order; Indra the warrior and Agni the fire; and the twin Ashvins, horsemen who heal. To carry them is to hold them up. Sāyaṇa reads 'with' as 'in the form of', so she moves as each of them. Others keep it as plain company.

Picture a string of beads: red, gold, blue, each a different shape. Looking at it, you see only the beads. Yet one thread passes through every bead and takes the weight of all of them. Speech is that thread. The gods stay distinct, each itself, while she runs through each one and holds the whole strand up.

मैं रुद्रों और वसुओं के साथ विचरती हूँ, मैं आदित्यों और सभी देवताओं के साथ विचरती हूँ। मैं मित्र और वरुण दोनों को, इंद्र और अग्नि को, और दोनों अश्विनों को धारण करती हूँ।
