The Slip in the Middle

Shiva Sutras 3.23

Meaning · English

In the middle, a lower emergence comes forth.

Three words carry this sutra. Madhye means in the middle. Avara means lower, the less fine. Prasava means a bringing forth, something coming up, from the root su, to give birth. Taken together: in the middle, something lower comes up. The middle is the stretch between two ends of a practice. Bhaskara's Varttika speaks of a yogi who rests in turya at the start and again at the close. Turya is the fourth state, beneath waking, dream and deep sleep, where one simply knows. Between those two points, the sutra says, a lower emergence can arise. In Bhaskara's account this is the ordinary busy mind, with its pull toward the world, coming back in when attention loosens. The sutra follows the earlier teaching on holding turya steadily. It belongs to anava, the way of effort, where the practitioner works with attention, breath and deliberate effort. Shambhava needs no effort and shakta works through thought, so a lapse like this is the particular risk of anava. Bhaskara adds a second step. The yogi stays watchful, and once the lower emergence passes, the taste of turya carries him on toward turyatita, what lies past even turya. The commentators read the sutra mainly as a warning that the middle is where attention slips.

Reading a long book, the first pages and the last pages stay vivid. In the middle chapters the eyes keep moving while the mind drifts to errands, and you find yourself three pages on with nothing taken in. The sutra's middle is that stretch of the book.

1. Choose one ordinary task today that takes ten minutes, such as washing dishes or walking to a shop. Give it your full attention at the start. 2. Notice the middle of it. Watch for the moment your mind slips off to plans or talk. 3. When you catch the slip, do not scold yourself. Just return to the task. 4. At the end, note in a sentence where in the ten minutes it happened.
