Rejoining Knower and Known
Shiva Sutras 3.24
Meaning · English
When one's own knowing is joined to each thing it measures, what was lost rises again.
Take the words one at a time. Matra means a measure, here the things the senses measure: forms, sounds, tastes, touches. Pratyaya means a knowing, a cognition. Svapratyaya is one's own knowing, the sense of "I am the one aware of this." Sandhana means joining, like fitting two parts together. Nashta means lost. Punarutthana means rising up again. So the sutra says that when one's own knowing is joined to each object as it is perceived, the lost state rises again. Bhaskara names that lost state as turya, the fourth, which underlies waking, dream and deep sleep and is easily dropped from sight. The sutra belongs to the anava way, the way of the small individual, which works through the ordinary senses and their objects. It follows from the sutra before it, which speaks of a lower stirring in the middle of practice. Here Shiva gives the means of recovery. The objects are not pushed away. The knower is joined back to them. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, reads it as the practitioner fixing attention on the knower inside every perception, so that what had dropped out of view returns. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the joining is the thought "that is I," and that its result is fullness of union.
A necklace breaks and the beads scatter across the floor. Each bead is whole, yet nothing is a necklace until the thread is passed through them again. The beads are the things perceived. The thread is the sense of being the one who perceives them, and it is what joins them.
1. Pick one ordinary sight today, such as a cup, a window or a face, and look at it for about thirty seconds. 2. While looking, quietly notice that someone is looking. Keep the object in view and do not look away from it. 3. Repeat with one sound, such as a tap running or a passing vehicle. Notice the hearing as well as the sound. 4. Do this three times today, at any hour, and see what changes in how the thing appears.
