Equal to Shiva, Still Embodied
Shiva Sutras 3.25
Meaning · English
He becomes equal to Shiva; he is born as one like Shiva.
Three words carry this sutra. Tulya means equal, of the same measure. Jayate means is born, comes to be. Shiva is the name for the one consciousness that is the inner self of every world. Taken together, the sutra says the practitioner comes to be on a par with Shiva. It does not say he gets near Shiva or looks up at him. The sutra belongs to anava upaya, the way of effort, where the person works with breath, attention and repeated practice. It rests on the verses before it. Sutra 3.23 and 3.24 describe how awareness slips and how it is joined again. Steady joining, repeated, leads to this result. Bhaskara's Varttika says the practitioner has practised turya, the fourth state beyond waking, dream and deep sleep, until he reaches the state beyond even that. There he is equal to Shiva, who is full of clear, conscious delight. Bhaskara adds that the body does not fall away at once. Past actions already ripening keep the body going, while stored actions are burnt like seeds in a fire. This is why the reading here is freedom while in the body. The commentators agree that the sutra names the fruit of the path.
A lamp is lit from another lamp. The new flame is no smaller than the first, and it gives the same light. Its own clay and wick still stand there and burn slowly. The practitioner is the second lamp: equal in flame, still in a body.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing a cup or climbing stairs, and do it slowly for two minutes. 2. During it, notice once that you are aware, apart from what you are doing. 3. When the task ends, pause for three breaths and notice that the body goes on while this awareness stays. 4. In the evening, recall one moment when you were fully present in what you did. Do not judge it. Just remember it.
