Daily Acts as the Vow
Shiva Sutras 3.26
Meaning · English
The body's way of acting is the vow.
Three words carry it. Sharira is the body. Vritti is the way something turns and goes on, its ordinary running. Vrata is a vow, an observance taken up and kept. So whatever the body goes on doing is the vow: walking, eating, sitting, speaking, resting. The sutra names no special act and sets no separate hour for keeping it. The day's own movements are the keeping. The sutra comes straight after the teaching that the yogi becomes like Shiva, the name for the awareness that is the ground of everything. A person in that state has no need to step out of the body to hold a discipline. The body is where the discipline lives. It belongs to anava, the way of the small means. There the limited self, called anu, begins from what is nearest to it, the body and its doings, and asks for nothing larger. Bhaskara's Varttika adds a colour: the body is filled with devotion to Shiva and offered to him, so its acts are the worship, and holding to that is no small thing. For the rest, the commentators agree that no extra observance is added to what the body already does.
1. Take one ordinary act already under way: walking to a door, washing a cup, eating. 2. Do only that act, slowly enough to feel each movement. 3. Treat the movement as the vow itself, not a pause before the real practice. 4. When the mind runs off, notice that it has gone and come back to the movement. 5. When the act ends, let it end. Take the next act the same way.
