Talk Is Japa

Shiva Sutras 3.27

Meaning · English

Talk itself is japa, the repeating of the mantra, whatever words happen to be spoken.

Two words. Katha is talk: telling, saying, ordinary speech. Japa comes from a root meaning to murmur, and it names the repeating of a mantra, the sacred sound a student is given. A mantra holds Shiva, the ground of everything, in a few syllables. The sutra sets the two side by side: talk is japa. Nothing is added to the talk. It does not say to stop speaking, or to speak only in mantras. It says that speech, just as it happens, is already the repeating. Why does Shiva teach it here? The sutras just before say that one grows equal to Shiva, and that the body's doings are the vow. Speech is the next doing to be gathered in. It belongs to the anava way, the way of small means, where a person works with what is nearest. Here that is the mouth and the word. Bhaskara's Varttika says this is the speech of one who knows his own self as the plain "I" and speaks truly. Each word rises from that "I" and returns to it, again and again, and that returning is what repeating is. He also reads japa as giving birth and keeping alive: such speech brings the self-knowing forth and sustains it. He adds that talk about such masters counts as japa too. The commentators, Kshemaraja among them, take the sutra to mean that the yogi's everyday speech is mantra.

1. Choose any ordinary moment of speaking: a call, a greeting, a word to someone at home. 2. Before you speak, pause for one breath's length and know that you are about to say something. 3. Say each word slowly enough to hear it leave you, as you would say a mantra. 4. When the mind runs ahead to the next sentence, come back to the word being spoken now. 5. When the talk ends, let the silence stand a moment, then go on.
