Giving Is Self-Knowing
Shiva Sutras 3.28
Meaning · English
Giving is the knowing of one's own self.
Three words carry it. Dana is giving, from the root da, to give. Atman is the self, the one who is aware in you. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. The sutra sets giving and self-knowing side by side and says they are the same. Giving, in this teaching, is not the handing over of a thing. It is the knowing of the self. Vasugupta puts this among the sutras of anava upaya, the way of the small individual, where the practitioner works with his own acts. It follows 3.26 and 3.27, which turn bodily action into a vow and speech into japa. Giving is the next ordinary act to receive the same treatment. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the gift as the self's own fullness, given with effort and with grace to the pupils nearest the teacher. In that giving, the sense of being divided is cut away, the self's own form is cleaned, and what is given is also guarded by recognising it. The commentators agree that what is given is knowing of the self, not an object. Bhaskara adds that the gift is kept in the very act of giving it.
1. Pick one small act of giving today: a coin, a plate of food, a kind word. 2. As your hand gives, attend to the one who is giving, not the thing or the person. 3. Rest in that knowing for a few breaths after your hand is empty. 4. When the mind turns to thanks or reward, come back to the one who gave. 5. Stop when the act is finished.
