Master of the Circle
Shiva Sutras 3.29
Meaning · English
He who stands in the circle that guards the flock is also the cause of knowing.
Three words carry this sutra. Avipa: avi means sheep, the bound beings, and pa means one who protects. So avipa is the guardian of the flock. Bhaskara's Varttika takes it as the circle of Shaktis, led by Maheshvari and others, who preside over the groups of letters beginning with ka. Stha means standing. One who is avipastha stands in that circle and is not driven by it. Jna is knowing, and hetu is cause. So the sutra says: the one who stands in the circle of powers behind speech is also the cause of knowing in others. The sutras before it prepare this. Sutra 3.27 makes talk into japa, and 3.28 makes giving into self-knowing. Here the sutra names the person who can give it. It belongs to the anava way, the way of working through the small, ordinary instruments of speech and mind. The Varttika reads the point this way. Someone ruled by the circle cannot manage his own self, so he cannot wake another. One who stands in the circle at will can lead disciples to knowing. The commentators read the sutra as describing a teacher who has first become free himself.
A caretaker with the full ring of keys can open any door for the people waiting outside. Someone locked inside the building cannot even open his own door. The keys are the mastery of the circle of powers, and the opened door is the knowing passed to others.
1. Once today, pick a habit of speech, such as an automatic reply or a filler phrase. For one conversation, notice it just before it comes out. 2. Say one ordinary sentence slowly, and watch the words being chosen. 3. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling someone who taught you something by being steady rather than by talking. Notice what in them was not pushed around by the moment.
