The World Gathered Power
Shiva Sutras 3.30
Meaning · English
The world is the gathering of his own power.
Three terms carry the sutra. Sva means one's own. Shakti means power, the capacity to know and to act. Pracaya means a heaping up, a gathering into a mass. Viśvam is the whole world. Asya means 'of this one', the practitioner the last verses have been describing. Taken word by word: for him, the world is his own power, gathered and heaped into a shape. It is not a separate thing standing outside him. The sutras before it have been loosening the sense of a small, cut-off self. Giving is self-knowing (3.28), and the master of the circle is not bound by it. So Shiva teaches here what the freed person sees when he looks out: what he meets is his own shakti, shown as many things. This sits in anava, the way of the small individual. The practitioner still starts from his own body, senses and world, and works with them. Shakti is the name for Shiva's power, kept as a name. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the world as the spread of the yogi's own power of awareness. Bhaskara's Varttika says the same by comparison: as the world is Shiva's gathered power, so it is for this yogi, though he adds that it is so for him even while he lives in the body, and not only at the moment of creation.
Think of a weaver standing before a finished cloth. Every thread, colour and pattern came out of her own hands and her own wool. Seen that way, the cloth is no stranger to her. The cloth is the world, and the weaver's hands are the yogi's own shakti.
1. Once today, pick one ordinary thing in front of you: a cup, a wall, a passing face. 2. Look at it for half a minute and notice that it is known only as it appears in your own awareness. 3. Say quietly to yourself, 'this too is my power showing itself', and watch whether the thing feels closer or the same. 4. Do not force a feeling. Return to your day.
