Abiding and Dissolving
Shiva Sutras 3.31
Meaning · English
Abiding and dissolving are the two: the gathering of his own powers.
Sthiti is standing, staying. Laya is melting, dissolving into rest. Shakti is power, and pracaya is a gathering or heaping up. Shiva teaches that abiding and dissolving are the two gatherings of the yogi's own powers. Abiding is the world standing before him for a while as "this", something known. Dissolving is that same world drawing back into the sense "I am", where knowing rests in itself. Bhaskara adds that whatever opens out and whatever folds in is made of awareness. Otherwise nothing could be known at all. The sutra comes just after 3.30, which says the world is the gathering of his own powers. Here Shiva names the two movements of that gathering. A doubt follows. If the world comes, stays and dissolves, does the yogi's own nature rise and fall with it? Bhaskara says the sutra is spoken to remove that doubt. The yogi does not change as the world opens and closes. This belongs to anava upaya, the way of small means, where the practitioner works with what appears and disappears in ordinary experience. Only the movements change. The commentators read it the same way: both movements belong to him, and neither is a loss.
A hand opens and closes. Open, it holds out what it has. Closed, it rests in itself. The hand is never two things, and neither the opening nor the closing is the hand going missing. The world standing and the world dissolving are those two movements, and the awareness behind them is the one hand.
1. Pick one ordinary thing today, such as a sound, a face or a passing worry. Notice it arrive and stay for a while as "this". 2. Watch it fade, and notice what is left when it is gone. 3. Before sleep, take two minutes to look back over the day. Notice that something in you was present for each thing that came and went.
