The Knower Within Action
Shiva Sutras 3.32
Meaning · English
Even when it goes forth into activity, there is no being thrown out, because the state of the knower remains.
Three words carry the sutra. Pravritti is the going forth: pra, forward, and vrit, to turn. It is the mind and body turning outward into work, speech and the making of things. Anirasa is not being thrown out: nir, away, and as, to cast. Nothing is cast off, and the yogi is not displaced from himself. Samvettri is the knower: sam, fully, and vid, to know. Bhava is the state of being. So the knower's state stays in place while activity goes on. The sutra says that going out into action does not lose the one who knows. Bhaskara adds that the pull of a task may fall quiet, and a dull mind then thinks it is lost. The inward knowing is never lost, because nothing else could notice its loss. This follows 3.30, where the world is the gathering of his own powers, and 3.31, where holding and withdrawing are named. If the world is his own power, going into it costs him nothing. It belongs to the anava way, where practice works through ordinary doing. The commentators agree that the yogi stays unshaken through the making, keeping and ending of things.
A potter at the wheel has both hands deep in wet clay, and the pot rises and collapses under them. Still, someone is watching the pot. Activity is the clay and the wheel. The one who watches is the knower, who is not lost in the work.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to a shop, and give it ten minutes. 2. Midway, pause inside the task without stopping your hands, and notice that someone is aware of the doing. 3. Notice whether that awareness feels different from the task itself, or the same. 4. Do this once more later in the day, during a different kind of task, such as a conversation.
