Pleasure and Pain, Seen Outside
Shiva Sutras 3.33
Meaning · English
Pleasure and pain are held in mind as something outside.
Three words carry this sutra. Sukha is pleasure, the sense of ease. Duhkha is pain, the sense of strain. Manana is reflecting, from the root man, to think: turning a thing over in the mind and looking at it. Bahih means outside. Put together, the sutra says pleasure and pain are reflected on as something outside. They are seen as passing objects, not as what one is. An ordinary person says, "I am happy, I am miserable," and becomes the feeling. Bhaskara's Varttika says the yogi sees pleasure and pain as plainly as a colour, blue or yellow, set in front of him. He is not stained by them as ordinary people are. Shiva teaches this after 3.32, which says the knower stays present even when activity rises. Feeling is one more rising, so the same knower stands apart from it. This belongs to anava upaya, the way of the small, practical means: the mind and its feelings are the workplace, and the practice is done on them directly. It asks for a change of seat, not a change of feeling. The commentators agree that the feeling is not denied. It is still felt, but it is placed in front of the knower and no longer taken as the knower.
Someone stands on a balcony and watches rain fall on the street. The street is soaked, the gutters run, the noise is loud, and the watcher stays dry. Pleasure and pain are the rain on the street. The one who sees them is the person on the balcony.
1. Today, when a clear pleasure or irritation comes, stop for the length of three breaths. 2. Say inwardly, "There is pleasure here," or "There is pain here," instead of "I am happy" or "I am upset." 3. Notice where in the body it sits, and how it shifts while you look at it. 4. Notice also that something in you is watching it. Then go on with your day.
