A Chain of Checks

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 40.25

Meaning · English

Patience holds back appetite and the belly. The eyes watch over the hands and feet. The mind watches over the eyes and ears. And the deed itself keeps mind and speech in check.

Vidura lists four pairs, and in each the second part is steadied by the first. Three words carry most of it. Upastha is the organ of sexual desire, and udara is the belly; both are appetites. Dhriti is steadiness, the patience that can wait while a craving passes. Karman is the act, what is actually done. The clauses run in order. Patience restrains hunger and desire. The eyes restrain the hands and feet, so that what is reached for or walked toward is first seen. The mind restrains the eyes and ears, so that attention is not dragged to whatever flashes or sounds. Last, action restrains mind and speech: what one does is the test of what one thinks and says, and talk that never becomes deed is not trusted. Vidura speaks to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra knows what is right and keeps drifting toward what he wants. Vidura's answer is that the body and mind hold a ladder of checks, and trouble starts when one rung is skipped. A hand that moves before the eyes have looked, or a word spoken before the mind has weighed it, is how a plan goes wrong. Looking first at the act, the one who will do it, and the purpose is built into this order.

A person at a kerb looks both ways before stepping onto a busy road. The feet wait for the eyes, and the eyes have already been told by the mind what to look for. Each part of us waits on the part above it, and a step taken without that look is where the accident happens.

1. Pick one ordinary action today, such as sending a message or replying to someone, and pause for three slow breaths before you begin. 2. In that pause, ask three things: what exactly am I about to do, who is doing it (calm or irritated), and what is it for? 3. At a meal, wait a minute after the first hunger before you take the first bite, and notice how the craving behaves. 4. In the evening, recall one thing you said that you did not then do, and notice the gap.
