Reach of the Steady Mind
Yoga Sutras 1.40
परमाणुपरममहत्त्वान्तोऽस्य वशीकारः
Meaning · English
For the mind that has been steadied, control extends to both ends of what can be known: from the finest particle to the greatest magnitude.
Take the words one at a time. Paramanu is the smallest particle, the point past which nothing divides. Parama-mahattva is the greatest magnitude, the largest thing the mind can hold. Anta means an end or limit, so the two together mark both ends of a range. Vashikara is bringing something under one's own will, so that it answers instead of wandering. Asya means 'of this one', and it points to the mind that has been steadied. The whole sutra says that the steadied mind can be brought to rest on anything, from the tiniest to the vastest, and no object is too fine or too large to hold it. The sutras before it give many supports for the mind to rest on and ways to quiet its turnings. The question left over is how far that steadiness can go. Patanjali answers that it has no set limit. Vyasa's commentary takes it as the mind's unobstructed reach: resting on the subtlest object, it goes on to the finest of the fine, and resting on the largest, it reaches the largest. When the reach is complete, the mind needs no further training on that ground. The commentators who came later follow him and spell out the two ends as the subtlest and the grossest objects of meditation.
A steady hand can thread a needle in the morning and carry a full water jar across the yard at noon without spilling. The hand is the same. Its steadiness does not depend on the size of the task. The mind that has been steadied works the same way, whether the object is a grain or a mountain.
1. Today, sit for two minutes with one tiny thing, such as a grain of rice or a seed, on a plate in front of you. Look only at it. 2. Then spend two minutes looking at something wide, such as the open sky or a whole street from a window. 3. In each, notice where your attention slips away and what pulls it. Compare the small object with the large one, and leave the comparison there without judging.
