Meaning · English
When the turnings of the mind have worn thin, the mind is like a flawless crystal. It takes the colour of whatever it rests on: the knower, the knowing, or the thing known. This settling into what it rests on is complete absorption.
Four terms carry the sutra. Vritti is a turning, one ripple of the mind-field. Kshina means worn thin, so these ripples have faded, not been cut off. Samapatti is a falling together: the mind settles into its object and joins it. Tatstha-tadanjanata says the mind stands in the object and takes its colouring, as a crystal does. The sutra then names three possible resting places. The grahitr is the one who knows. The grahana is the act or instrument of knowing. The grahya is the thing known. Taken whole, the sutra says that once the mind's restless turnings have thinned, it no longer adds its own tint. It shows what it rests on, truly, whichever of the three that is. Patanjali says this because he has defined yoga as the stilling of those turnings, and the previous sutra spoke of mastery over everything from the smallest to the largest. Now he asks what a quiet mind is like when it meets something. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the three as the knower, the means of knowing (the senses), and the objects known, and reads absorption as the mind taking the form of each. Later commentators differ mainly over which of the three is the finer resting place.
A window washed clean shows the garden exactly: the red of the roses, the lean of the fence. A dusty window shows mostly dust, with the garden dimly behind it. The mind with its turnings worn thin is the clean glass. What it rests on appears as it is.
1. Choose one ordinary object today, such as a cup or a leaf, and look at it for two minutes. 2. When a thought about it arrives (a name, an opinion, a memory), notice that the thought is a separate thing from the object, and return to the object. 3. At day's end, recall whether the object was ever seen without a comment attached. Simply notice; do not score it.
