Parasara said: Mritya had a daughter named Suneetha, and Anga married her. She gave birth to a son, Vena. Because his mother was Mritya's daughter, Vena took after his grandfather, and the same evil ran in him. The great Rishis anointed him king. At once Vena had it announced everywhere that he was lord of the earth. No one was to hold a sacrifice, no one was to pour an offering, no one was to give a gift. "I am the king," he said. "I am the lord of sacrifice. No one but me has a right to any offering." So the worship that held the world together simply stopped, and the land went quiet and fearful under him.
The Rishis gathered and honored the king, and they spoke to him gently. "Great king, hear what we say, for it will keep you well and keep your people safe. We want to worship Hari, lord of the gods and of sacrifice, with long rites, and you will have a share in them. If Hari is pleased with our sacrifices, he will fulfill every wish of yours. Wherever Hari is worshipped with sacrifice, he grants that kingdom all it desires." Vena answered, "Who is above me, that I should worship him? Who is this Hari you call lord of sacrifices? Brahma, Janarddana, Sambhu, Indra, Vayu, Jama, the Sun, Fire, Varuna, the earth and the moon all live in a king. A king is made of everything divine. So obey me. Give to no one else, worship no one else. A wife serves her husband first, and you must serve my commands."
The Rishis tried once more. "Great king, give us leave to hold the sacrifices, so that righteousness does not wither. This whole world comes out of offerings." They asked again and again. Vena refused every time. Then the ascetics were seized by terrible anger. "Kill him," they cried. "Kill this wicked burden. A man who insults the lord of sacrifices, who has no beginning and no end, has no right to rule the earth." They took blades of kusa grass, charged with prayer, and struck down the king. His disrespect toward God had already destroyed him. Afterward the ascetics saw dust rising on every side. "What is this?" they asked the people nearby. "The land has no king," the people said. "Robbers are rushing to seize other people's property. That is their dust."
The ascetics talked it over. Vena had no son, so they resolved to bring one forth, and they began to rub his thigh. From it rose a man dark as a charred stake, short, with flattened features. "What shall I do?" he asked at once. "Sit down," they said, in their word, Nishada, and that became his name. From him came the Nishadas, who live in the Vindya mountains and carry the marks of wickedness on their bodies. In this way Vena's evil was drawn out of him and took birth as the Nishadas. Then the twice-born began to rub Vena's right hand. From it came Prithu, Vena's mighty son, shining and blazing like fire itself.
From the sky fell Hara's own bow, Pinaka, together with a divine arrow and divine armor. When Prithu was born, every creature around him was glad. At the birth of this righteous son, Vena also reached the world of the gods. Prithu had freed him from the hell called Pat. Then the seas and the rivers came from every direction, bringing holy water, pearls and gems of many kinds, for Prithu's anointing as king.
