The story · English
Brahma, the great parent of all, came to the crowning. With him came the celestials and the descendants of Angiras, the fires, and every living thing, moving and unmoving. They had come to consecrate the lord of people, Prithu, the son of King Vena. When the rites began, Brahma looked at Prithu's right hand. There he saw the mark of the discus of Vishnu. He knew then that a portion of Vishnu himself was present in this man, and his delight grew beyond measure. This mark is not rare among kings. Everyone who becomes a true sovereign of the earth carries the discus of Vishnu in his palm. Prithu carried it, and Brahma saw it and was glad.
So Prithu, son of Vena, was invested with a mighty dominion. His command was never blocked, even in the realm of the celestials. He was crowned by men skilled in the proper rites, and he shone with great splendor. The people had been turned against his father's rule. Now even they became fully attached to Prithu. Because he was so devoted to his subjects, he came to be known everywhere as "the king." The world answered him. The waters turned solid when he crossed the deep. The mountains opened a path for him. His banners passed through the forests without once being torn. In his time the earth gave grain without being plowed. People found their food without worry. The king gave milk at any hour, and honey lay stored in every flower.
Now the story goes back to the sacrifice held at Prithu's birth, led by Brahma. From the juice of the moon plant, offered in that sacrifice, a man named Suta was born. In the same great sacrifice another was born, called Magadha. The Rishis turned to the two of them and said, "Sing the glory of this powerful king, Prithu, the son of Vena. Praise is your special work, and he is the right one to receive it." The two men folded their hands and answered the twice-born sages. "This king was born only today. We know of no deeds of his, and his fame has not yet spread. Tell us, what shall we build our praise upon?"
The Rishis answered, "Sing of what he will do. He will become emperor of the earth, and he will be crowned with great virtues. Praise him for those." Parasara tells us that the king heard these words and was deeply pleased. He thought to himself, "People are praised for their actions. Surely my own good actions will be the theme of these bards. Whatever virtues they name in their praise, I will take up with all my attention. Whatever faults they tell me to avoid, I will always shun." That was his resolve. He did not wait to be told what kind of king he must be. He took the praise that had not yet been earned as a promise he would have to keep.
Then Suta and Magadha began to sing, in sweet voices, of the virtues Prithu would have. "He will be truthful and generous, and he will keep his promises. He will be a lord of the people, wise, kind, patient and brave, and a restrainer of the wicked. He will be pious, grateful, gentle and soft in speech. He will always honor the venerable, perform sacrifices, and respect the Brahmins, and the pious will always acknowledge him. He will cherish the good. In giving justice he will treat friend and foe alike." Prithu kept these words in his heart. The virtues the two bards had sung of him, he practised in his own life.
