The story · English

Prithu, the son of Vena, ruled the earth, and he performed many sacrifices and gave generously to those who came. But one day his subjects came to him weak with hunger. The edible plants had died out during the long season of anarchy before his reign, and the people were starving. The king asked why they had come. They said, "Foremost of kings, in the time of anarchy every plant was withheld from us, and now many of us are dying for lack of food. You were appointed our lord and our sustainer. Give us the plants that hold up our lives, for we are dying of hunger." The king listened, and his anger rose.

He took up his bow, Pinaka, and his divine arrows, and went out to attack the Earth herself. The Earth took the shape of a cow and ran. She fled through the world of Brahma and through every other realm, out of fear. But wherever she went, supporter of all beings that she is, she saw the son of Vena behind her with his weapon raised. At last, trembling with terror and wanting only to escape his arrows, she spoke to Prithu, whose strength nothing could resist. "Lord of men, do you not know that great sin hangs over the killing of a female? Why are you trying to kill me?"

Prithu answered, "You have done wrong, and you are the cause of this. When one harmful being is destroyed and the happiness of many is secured, that destruction counts as virtue." The Earth said, "If you kill me for the good of your people, who will support them, foremost of kings?" Prithu said, "I will kill you with my arrows, since you will not obey me. Then I will support my people myself, by the power of my own devotion." The Earth, shaking with fear, bowed to him and spoke again. "Any undertaking succeeds when the right means are used. Let me offer you one. The plants I swallowed, I can give back to you as milk. Give me a calf, so that the milk will flow. And make the ground level, so that I can give milk evenly everywhere, the milk that becomes all growing things."

Then the son of Vena took his bow and uprooted mountains by the hundreds and thousands, and that is why hills lie scattered across the earth. Before this the land had been uneven, with no boundaries for villages or towns. There was no farming, no pasture, no roads for merchants. All of these began, Maitreya, in the reign of the son of Vena. Wherever the ground was level, the king settled his people. Before his time, fruits and roots were the people's food, and they were found only with great difficulty, since the plants had been destroyed. Then Prithu made Swaymbhuva Manu the calf, and with his own hands he milked the Earth. For the good of his people, grains and plants of every kind came forth, and people live on them to this day.

By giving the Earth her life, Prithu became her father, and so she is called Prithivi, the daughter of Prithu. Then the gods, the ascetics, the demons, the Rakshasas, the mountains, the Gandharvas, the Uragas, the Yakshas, the Pitris and the trees each came with their own vessels and milked the Earth, taking as much as they needed, Manu. In each case the milker and the calf belonged to their own kind. The Earth, mother, nurse, supporter and nourisher of all creatures, was born from the sole of Vishnu's foot. Prithu pleased his subjects, and so he became the first man to be called lord of the earth. Whoever tells of the birth of the son of Vena will not suffer for his own wrongdoing, and whoever hears of Prithu's birth and virtues will be freed from the torment of evil dreams.
