Drupada Captured

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 140

The story · English

Drona looked upon the Pandavas and the son of Dhritarashtra and saw that they had become masters of the arts of war. He decided the time had come to demand his fee for their education. He assembled his pupils and told them that the most acceptable fee would be for them to seize King Drupada of Panchala in battle and bring him to him. The warriors agreed and immediately mounted their chariots. Accompanied by Drona, they marched toward the capital of Panchala. Along the way, they smote the Panchala forces and laid siege to the city. Duryodhana, Karna, Yuyutsu, Duhsasana, Vikarna, Jalasandha, and Sulochana vied with one another to be the first to lead the attack into the hostile capital.

The princes entered the city streets in their first-class chariots, following the cavalry. King Drupada, hearing the loud clamour of the invading force, left his palace with his brothers to meet them. Although Drupada, also known as Yajnasena, was well-armed, the Kuru army assailed him with a shower of arrows and war-cries. Drupada did not yield easily. He drove his white chariot forward and rained fierce arrows upon the attackers. Before the battle commenced, seeing the pride of the Kuru princes, Arjuna had addressed Drona. He told his teacher that they would exert themselves only after the others had shown their prowess, for he believed that no one among those princes could capture the King of Panchala on the field.

Arjuna and his brothers waited a mile outside the town. Meanwhile, Drupada rushed forward, afflicting the Kuru ranks with a fierce shower of arrows. He moved with such lightness and speed that the panicked Kurus believed they were fighting many Drupadas instead of one man. As the battle intensified, the citizens of Panchala sounded thousands of conchs, trumpets, and drums from their houses to give the alarm. A roar like that of a lion arose from the Panchala host, and the sound of their bow-strings seemed to rend the heavens. Duryodhana, Vikarna, Suvahu, Dirghalochana, and Duhsasana grew furious and showered their arrows upon the enemy.

Despite being pierced by many arrows, Drupada fought with increasing vigour. He careered across the field like a fiery wheel, smiting Duryodhana, Vikarna, and even the mighty Karna. The citizens of the city joined the fight, raining missiles down upon the Kurus like clouds showering rain. Both young and old rushed into the battle with vigour. The Kauravas, seeing the situation become frightful and feeling the weight of the defeat, broke their ranks. Wailing in fear, they fled the field and retreated toward the Pandavas, who had been waiting outside the town. Hearing the cries of the beaten host, the Pandavas saluted Drona and ascended their chariots to enter the fray.

Arjuna told Yudhishthira not to engage in the fight and rushed forward. He appointed Nakula and Sahadeva to protect his chariot-wheels, while Bhima ran ahead in the van with his mace in hand. Bhima entered the Panchala ranks like a second Yama, roaring like the ocean in a tempest. He first targeted the array of elephants. With his mace, Bhima smashed the heads of the huge animals, which fell to the ground like cliffs loosened by thunder. The Pandavas prostrated thousands of elephants, horses, and chariots, and slew many foot-soldiers and car-warriors. Like a herdsman driving cattle with a staff, Bhima drove the hostile force before him.

Arjuna, wishing to do good for his teacher Drona, targeted Drupada and felled him from the elephant he was riding. Arjuna then fought like a fire that consumes all things at the end of an age, destroying thousands of horses and chariots. The Panchalas and Srinjayas fought desperately, meeting Arjuna with a shower of various weapons and loud shouts. Filled with wrath, Arjuna rushed into the host. Those watching could not even see the interval between the time he fixed an arrow on his bowstring and the time he let it fly. The air was filled with shouts and cheers of approval for the son of Indra.

King Drupada and his general, Satyajit, rushed at Arjuna. Arjuna covered the king with arrows, causing a frightful uproar among the Panchala troops. Seeing Arjuna move to seize the king, Satyajit intervened. The two warriors fought like Indra and Vali, grinding each other's ranks. Arjuna pierced Satyajit with ten keen shafts, but Satyajit responded with a hundred. Arjuna, moving with remarkable lightness, rubbed his bowstring to increase the velocity of his shots and cut Satyajit's bow in two. However, Satyajit quickly took up a tougher bow and pierced Arjuna, his chariot, his horses, and his charioteer with arrows.

Arjuna did not forgive the attack. Eager to end the fight, he pierced Satyajit's horses, flags, bow, left fist, charioteer, and attendant. Finding his bows repeatedly broken and his horses slain, Satyajit desisted from the fight. King Drupada, seeing his general discomfited, showered arrows upon the Pandava prince. Arjuna fought furiously, cutting Drupada's bow and flagstaff. He then pierced the king's horses and charioteer with five arrows. Throwing aside his bow, Arjuna took out a scimitar and, with a loud shout, leaped from his own chariot onto that of his foe. He seized Drupada as a Garuda seizeth a snake, and the Panchala troops fled in all directions.

Having exhibited his might, Arjuna emerged from the Panchala ranks with his captive. The other princes began to lay waste to the capital, but Arjuna stopped them. He told Bhima that Drupada was a relative of the Kuru heroes and that they should not slay his soldiers, but only deliver the king as the preceptor's fee. Bhima, though unsatiated by battle, refrained from further slaughter. Drupada, along with his friends and counsellors, was brought before Drona. Drona looked at the humiliated and impoverished monarch and remembered their former hostility. He declared that he had laid waste Drupada's kingdom and capital, and asked him if he now desired to revive their friendship. Then he smiled a little and spoke again.

Drona told Drupada not to fear for his life, as Brahmanas are forgiving and their childhood friendship in the hermitage still held value. He asked for Drupada's friendship again and, as an unasked boon, gave back half his kingdom. Since Drupada once said only a king could be a king's friend, Drona kept the other half: Drupada would rule all the territory south of the Bhagirathi, and Drona the north. Drupada praised Drona's noble soul and prowess and desired his eternal friendship. Released, he resided sorrowfully in Kampilya, ruling the southern Panchalas up to the Charmanwati. Convinced that Kshatriya might alone could not defeat Drona, his superior in spiritual power, he began to wander the earth seeking a son who could subjugate his foe. Drona resided in Ahicchatra, which Arjuna had won for him.
