Karna at the Tournament

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 139

The story · English

Adhiratha entered the tournament grounds trembling and perspiring, leaning on a staff with his sheet hanging loosely around him. When Karna saw him, he set aside his bow and bowed his head in filial respect. His head was still wet from the water used in his coronation as the king of Anga. The charioteer hurriedly covered his feet with the end of his sheet and addressed Karna as his son. Overwhelmed by affection, Adhiratha embraced Karna and wept, his tears wetting the crown-water that still clung to Karna's head.

Bhimasena witnessed the interaction between the two and ridiculed Karna. He mocked him for being the son of a charioteer and told him that he did not deserve to die in a fight against Partha. Bhimasena told Karna to take up the whip, as was befitting his race, and called him the worst of mortals. He declared that Karna was not worthy to rule the kingdom of Anga, comparing him to a dog that does not deserve the butter placed before a sacrificial fire. Karna did not answer, but his lips quivered and he let out a deep sigh while looking up at the sun.

Duryodhana rose in a rage from among his brothers, like a mad elephant rising from a gathering of lotuses. He addressed Bhimasena, telling him that such words were improper. Duryodhana argued that might is the primary virtue of a Kshatriya, and that even a warrior of inferior birth deserves to be fought with. He noted that the origins of great heroes are ever unknown, just as the sources of a great river are hidden. He pointed out that the world-covering fire rises from water and the thunderbolt that killed the Danavas was made from the bone of a mortal named Dadhichi.

Duryodhana went on: the lineage of the deity Guha was unknown, for some called him the son of Agni, others of Krittika, Rudra or Ganga. Viswamitra and others born Kshatriyas had become Brahmanas; Drona was born in a waterpot and Kripa sprang from a clump of heath. The Pandava princes' own births, he told them, were known to him. Could a she-deer bear a tiger like Karna, with the splendor of the sun, auspicious marks, natural mail and earrings? By the might of his arm, and because Duryodhana had sworn to obey him in everything, Karna deserved the sovereignty of the world, not of Anga only. He challenged anyone who objected to ascend his chariot and bend his bow with his feet.

A confused murmur of approval rose from the spectators. As the sun set, Duryodhana took Karna by the hand and led him out of the arena, which was now lit by countless lamps. The Pandavas, along with Drona, Kripa, and Bhishma, returned to their homes. Some people named Arjuna the victor, some named Karna, and some named Duryodhana. Kunti, seeing the auspicious marks on Karna, recognized him as her son and felt motherly pleasure that he was now king of Anga. Duryodhana no longer feared Arjuna's skill, while Karna began to please Duryodhana with sweet speech, and Yudhishthira believed no warrior on earth equaled Karna.
