Ekalavya's Thumb

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 134

The story · English

Drona, a man of great energy, settled in the home of the Kurus. Bhishma welcomed him and entrusted his grandsons, the Kaurava princes, to Drona as pupils. He also gave Drona a tidy house filled with wealth and paddy. Drona joyfully accepted the sons of Pandu and Dhritarashtra. One day, Drona called the princes aside and asked them to touch his feet. With a swelling heart, he told them he had a particular purpose in mind and asked them to promise that they would accomplish it once they became skilled in arms. While the other princes remained silent, Arjuna vowed to do whatever was required. Drona was so moved that he wept with joy and clasped Arjuna to his bosom.

Drona began teaching the sons of Pandu the use of celestial and human weapons. Other princes from various lands, including the Vrishnis, the Andhakas, and Karna, the son of Radha, also came to study under him. Karna was jealous and frequently defied Arjuna, often disregarding the Pandavas with the support of Duryodhana. However, Arjuna remained devoted to the science of arms, always staying by Drona's side. Although the instruction was the same for every student, Arjuna's perseverance and skill made him the foremost of all his fellow pupils. Drona became convinced that none of his students would ever be able to equal the son of Indra in his prowess.

To favor his own son, Aswatthaman, Drona gave him a broad-mouthed vessel for fetching water so he could finish the task quickly and spend more time learning superior weapon methods. He gave the other pupils narrow-mouthed vessels to ensure they spent more time filling them. Arjuna noticed this disparity and used the Varuna weapon to fill his narrow vessel quickly, returning to Drona at the same time as Aswatthaman. Through this intelligence and devotion, Arjuna ensured he remained equal to the preceptor's son. Arjuna's dedication made him Drona's favorite. Drona even secretly told his cook never to serve Arjuna his food in the dark, nor to tell Arjuna that he had requested this.

One day while Arjuna was eating, a wind blew out the lamp. Arjuna found that his hand continued to move to his mouth by habit, even in the darkness. Realizing the power of habit, Arjuna decided to practice with his bow at night. Drona heard the twang of the bowstring in the dark and went to him. He clasped Arjuna and told him that he would ensure no archer in the world would be equal to him. Drona then expanded Arjuna's training, teaching him to fight on horseback, on elephants, in cars, and on the ground. He also trained him in the use of the mace, the sword, the lance, the spear, and the dart.

As Drona's fame grew, thousands of princes flocked to him. Among them was Ekalavya, the son of King Hiranyadhanus of the Nishadas. Drona knew all the rules of morality, and he refused to accept Ekalavya as a pupil, fearing that a Nishada might one day excel his high-born students. Ekalavya bowed his head, touched Drona's feet, and departed into the forest. There, he created a clay image of Drona and worshipped it as his real teacher. Through rigid regularity and exceptional reverence, Ekalavya mastered the art of archery, becoming effortless in fixing arrows, aiming, and letting them fly.

Later, the Kuru and Pandava princes went hunting in the woods, followed by a servant and a dog. The dog wandered off and came upon Ekalavya, who was dark-skinned, dressed in black, and had matted locks. When the dog barked at him, Ekalavya decided to exhibit his skill. He shot seven arrows into the dog's mouth before it could shut. The dog returned to the Pandavas, and the princes were filled with wonder. Ashamed of their own skill, they praised the precision of the unknown archer and searched the woods until they found the man who had shot the arrows.

The princes asked the stranger who he was. He replied that he was the son of Hiranyadhanus, the Nishada king, and that he was a pupil of Drona. When the Pandavas returned to the city, they told Drona about the feat. Arjuna, remembering Drona's promise that no pupil would equal him, spoke to Drona in private. He asked why there was now a pupil, the son of the Nishada king, who was superior to him. Drona reflected on this for a moment and decided on a course of action. He took Arjuna and went into the forest to find the Nishada prince.

Drona found Ekalavya in rags, his body smeared with filth, ceaselessly shooting arrows. Upon seeing Drona, Ekalavya stepped forward, touched the teacher's feet and prostrated himself, claiming himself as his pupil. Drona addressed him and said that if he was truly his pupil, he must pay the tuition fee. Ekalavya was gratified and told Drona that there was nothing he would not give. Drona then made his demand, stating that if Ekalavya was intent on giving a gift, he wanted the thumb of Ekalavya's right hand. Without hesitation or affliction, Ekalavya cut off his thumb and gave it to Drona.

When Ekalavya tried to shoot again using his remaining fingers, he found he had lost his former lightness of hand. This made Arjuna happy, as his jealousy vanished. Meanwhile, other pupils excelled in specific areas. Duryodhana and Bhima became accomplished in the mace, though they were jealous of each other. Aswatthaman excelled in the mysteries of arms, while Nakula and Sahadeva were the best with the sword. Yudhishthira was the superior car-warrior. However, Arjuna outdistanced everyone in intelligence, strength, and perseverance, becoming an Atiratha, a warrior capable of fighting sixty thousand foes at once. Seeing Bhima's great strength and Arjuna's skill in all arms, the sons of Dhritarashtra grew very jealous.

To test them, Drona placed an artificial bird on a tree and told his pupils to shoot off its head. He called them one by one. He first asked Yudhishthira what he saw. Yudhishthira replied that he saw the tree, Drona, his brothers, and the bird. Drona asked again, and the answer remained the same. Vexed, Drona told him to stand apart. He repeated this with Duryodhana, the other sons of Dhritarashtra, Bhima, and the other princes. Every single one of them gave the same answer, claiming to see the tree, the teacher, and their peers along with the bird. Drona reproached them all and ordered them to stand aside.
