Drona and the Ball in the Well
Mahabharata, Adi Parva 133
The story · English
Drona, the son of Bharadwaja, lived a private life in the house of Kripa at Hastinapura. While he remained out of the public eye, his powerful son, Aswatthaman, would occasionally give the sons of Kunti lessons in the use of arms between Kripa's own teachings. Despite this, the true extent of Aswatthaman's prowess remained unknown to most. One day, the heroic princes left the city of Hastinapura together to play. As they wandered in high spirits, they played with a ball, but the game took a turn when the ball fell deep into a well. The princes tried their best to recover it, but every effort they made proved futile. They looked at one another with anxiety, unsure of how to get it back.
As the princes stood in despair, they noticed a Brahmana nearby. He was of a darkish hue, lean and decrepit, and had just finished his daily rites of worship. The princes surrounded him at once. Seeing the princes in their predicament, Drona smiled. He was fully conscious of his own skill and spoke to them with a touch of irony. He told them that it was a shame on their Kshatriya might and their skill in arms that they, born into the race of Bharata, could not recover a simple ball from a well. He made a condition, telling them that if they promised him a dinner that day, he would retrieve the ball and a ring using only blades of grass.
To prove his point, Drona took off his ring and threw it down into the dry well. Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, replied that a single dinner was a trifle and told Drona that with Kripa's permission, he should ask for something that would sustain him for life. Drona smiled and explained his method. He said he would use his mantras to invest a handful of long grass with the virtue of weapons, giving the blades properties that ordinary weapons do not possess. He explained that he would pierce the ball with one blade, then pierce that blade with a second, and a third with another, creating a chain to pull the ball up.
Drona performed exactly as he had described. The princes were amazed, their eyes wide with delight at this extraordinary sight. They immediately asked the learned Brahmana to recover the ring as well without any further delay. Drona then took a bow and an arrow, pierced the ring with the arrow, and brought it up from the well instantly. He coolly handed the ring, still pierced by the arrow, to the astonished princes. Overwhelmed by his skill, the princes bowed to him and admitted that no one else possessed such ability. They asked him who he was and whose son he was, offering to do whatever he required of them.
Drona told the princes to go to Bhishma and describe his likeness and his skills, noting that the mighty Bhishma would recognize him. The princes did so, relating every detail of the extraordinary feat. Upon hearing the story, Bhishma immediately understood that the Brahmana was Drona. Believing that Drona would be the best preceptor for the princes, Bhishma went to him in person. He welcomed Drona respectfully and brought him over. Bhishma then asked Drona to explain the cause of his arrival at Hastinapura, and Drona began to recount the history of his life and the events that had led him there.
Drona explained that long ago he had served the great Rishi Agnivesa to learn the science of arms. During those years, he lived as a humble Brahmacharin with matted locks. At the same asylum, he met the prince of Panchala, Yajnasena, who became his closest friend. They studied together for many years, and Yajnasena always acted in a way that was agreeable to Drona. Yajnasena had promised that once he was installed as the monarch of the Panchalas, the kingdom would belong to Drona. He told Drona that his dominion, wealth, and happiness would be dependent on his friend. Eventually, Yajnasena finished his studies and returned to his own country.
Some time later, Drona married Kripi, a woman of great intelligence who had observed rigid vows and sacrifices. In time, they had a son named Aswatthaman, whose splendor was compared to the sun. Drona's happiness in having his son was equal to the joy his own father had felt upon his birth. However, a difficult time came when young Aswatthaman saw the sons of rich men drinking milk and began to cry for some. Drona wanted a cow for his son, but he did not want to take one from a poor man who might lose the ability to perform sacrifices. He wandered from country to country, but failed to obtain a milch cow.
Drona recalled the pain of seeing his son deceived by playmates who gave him water mixed with powdered rice. The boy danced with joy, believing he had finally had milk. Drona was devastated, especially when he heard busy-bodies mocking him for being an indigent man whose son mistook rice water for milk. Reproaching himself, Drona resolved that he would not become a servant for wealth, even if he were censured by other Brahmanas. He decided to visit his old friend Yajnasena, now King Drupada of the Somakas, taking his wife and child with him. He approached Drupada confidently, saying, know me for your friend.
Drupada laughed in derision and cast Drona off as a vulgar fellow. He told Drona that friendship only exists between equals, not between a king and a poor, luckless man of impure birth. Drupada said he did not remember ever promising the kingdom and offered only food and shelter for one night. Insulted and filled with wrath, Drona left with his family, vowing to act soon. He told Bhishma that he had come to Hastinapura to find intelligent pupils. Bhishma told Drona to string his bow and train the Kuru princes. He assured Drona that he would be welcomed with every comfort and that the wealth and sovereignty of the Kurus were his.
