Bhima Poisoned

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 128

The story · English

After the death of the monarch, Bhishma and Kunti performed the funeral rites and offered the Pinda. They provided feasts for the Kauravas and thousands of Brahmanas, gifting them lands and gems. Once the sons of Pandu were cleansed of the impurity of their father's death, the citizens returned with them to Hastinapura, mourning the king as if they had lost their own kin. Seeing the grief of the people, the venerable Vyasa spoke to his mother Satyavati. He told her that their days of happiness had passed and days of calamity had arrived. He warned her that the Kaurava empire would not endure because of oppression and wrong, and advised her to go to the forest to devote herself to Yoga and contemplation.

Satyavati agreed with Vyasa and spoke to her daughter-in-law, Ambika. She told her that the Bharata dynasty and its subjects would perish because of the deeds of her grandsons. With the permission of Bhishma, Satyavati went to the forest accompanied by Ambika and Kausalya, who was deeply grieved by the loss of her son. There, the three women engaged in profound contemplation until Satyavati eventually left her body and ascended to heaven. Meanwhile, the sons of Pandu completed their purifying rites and grew up in the princely style of their father's home. As they played with the sons of Dhritarashtra, the superiority of the Pandavas' strength became clear, especially that of Bhimasena, who far surpassed the others in speed and power.

Bhima, the son of the Wind-god, routinely defeated the hundred and one children of Dhritarashtra as if they were a single opponent. He would pull them by the hair and make them fight one another while he laughed. He dragged them across the earth, breaking their knees, heads, and shoulders. Sometimes he held ten of them at once and drowned them in water until they were nearly dead. When the other princes climbed trees to pluck fruit, Bhima would strike the trunk with his foot, shaking the tree so that the fruits and the boys fell together. Bhima did this to display his might during their childhood, and while he tormented them, he did so without true malice.

Duryodhana, the eldest son of Dhritarashtra, watched these displays and grew hostile. Driven by ambition and ignorance, he decided to destroy Bhima through artifice, knowing that no one could match him in a fair fight. He planned to wait until Bhima slept in a garden and then throw him into the current of the Ganga. Once Bhima was gone, he intended to confine Yudhishthira and Arjuna so he could reign as the sole king. To execute this, Duryodhana built a lavish palace called the water-sport house at a place called Pramanakoti on the banks of the Ganga. The mansion was decorated with rich cloths and flags, and skilled cooks prepared choice foods to lure the Pandavas there.

Duryodhana invited the Pandavas to spend time in the gardens and sport in the water. Yudhishthira agreed, and the princes traveled from the city on great elephants and large cars. Upon arriving, they dismissed their attendants and entered the beautifully painted palace. They enjoyed the artificial fountains, the lotus tanks, and the fragrance of the flowers. As they sat together and exchanged morsels of food, Duryodhana, who had nectar on his tongue but a razor in his heart, fed Bhima a large quantity of food mixed with a powerful poison. Having successfully poisoned his rival, Duryodhana felt glad and joined the others in sporting in the river.

Fatigued from the water sports and under the influence of the poison, Bhima lay down to rest. The cool air caused the poison to spread through his frame, and he lost consciousness. Duryodhana seized the opportunity to bind Bhima with shrub chords and throw him into the Ganga. Bhima sank into the kingdom of the Nagas. Thousands of serpents bit him, but their virulent venom neutralized the vegetable poison in his blood. The snakes bit him everywhere except for his chest, where the skin was too tough for their fangs to penetrate. This combination of poisons eventually woke him, and Bhima burst his bonds and began to press the snakes into the ground.

The surviving snakes fled to their king, Vasuki, reporting that a man bound in chords and poisoned had fallen among them and was now attacking them. Vasuki went to investigate and discovered that the man was Bhima, a relative of the serpent Aryaka, who was the grandfather of Kunti's father. Vasuki embraced Bhima and asked Aryaka how they should please him. Aryaka suggested that instead of wealth, Bhima should drink from the rasakunda, the nectar-vessels. Each vessel contained the strength of a thousand elephants. After performing auspicious rites, Bhima drank eight successive jars of nectar until he was full, and the serpents prepared a bed for him to rest in ease.
