The Sons of Pandu
Mahabharata, Adi Parva 126
The story · English
Following the death of King Pandu, the wise Rishis who lived with him on the mountain consulted one another. Pandu had abandoned his kingdom and sovereignty to live among them as an ascetic, but he had now ascended to heaven. He left behind his wife and infant sons as a trust in the hands of the sages. The Rishis, being magnanimous in heart, resolved that their duty was to return the children and their mother to the kingdom of Hastinapura. They decided to place the children safely in the care of Bhishma and Dhritarashtra. The ascetics set out immediately, bringing with them the children, Kunti, and the bodies of the dead.
The affectionate Kunti, though unused to toil all her life, thought the long journey very short. When they arrived at the principal gate of Kurujangala, the ascetics told the porters to inform the king of their arrival. The message reached the court quickly. The citizens of Hastinapura were filled with wonder upon hearing that thousands of Charanas and Munis had arrived. Shortly after sunrise, the people began to emerge from their homes with their wives and children to witness the arrival of these holy men.
Thousands of people arrived in various carriages and conveyances. Kshatriyas, Brahmanas, Vaisyas, and Sudras all gathered in a vast and peaceful assembly, as every heart was inclined toward piety. Among them were Bhishma, the son of Santanu, and Somadatta, also known as Valhika. The royal sage Dhritarashtra, who possessed the vision of knowledge, came forward along with Vidura, the venerable Satyavati, the princess of Kosala, and Gandhari with the other ladies of the royal household. The hundred sons of Dhritarashtra also came out, dressed in their various ornaments.
The Kauravas and their priest bowed their heads in salute to the Rishis and took their seats before them. The rest of the citizens also bowed low, touching the ground. Bhishma brought the crowd to silence and worshipped the ascetics, offering them water to wash their feet and the customary Arghya. After this, he spoke with them regarding the sovereignty and the kingdom. Then the oldest of the ascetics, who wore animal skins and had matted locks, stood up. With the agreement of the other Rishis, he began to address the gathered assembly about the life and children of Pandu.
The sage explained that Pandu had lived by Brahmacharya on the mountain of a hundred peaks. There, Yudhishthira was born through Dharma, Bhima through Vayu, and Dhananjaya through Indra. He also presented the twin sons of Madri, born of the Aswins. The sage revealed that Pandu had died seventeen days ago, and Madri had sacrificed her life by ascending the funeral pyre with her husband. He asked the Kurus to receive the children and their mother with honor, to perform the necessary rites for the dead, and then to perform Pandu's first annual Sraddha to install him among the Pitris. Having spoken, the ascetics and Guhyakas vanished like vapor, leaving the wonderstruck citizens to return to their homes.
