Called Three Times Daily
Rig Veda 10.151.5
Meaning · English
We call on Faith at dawn, we call on Faith at midday, we call on Faith as the sun goes down. Faith, fill us with faith here.
Faith is named as a goddess, Shraddha, and the same word is the trust she gives. The hymn calls her at three points of the day: early morning, noon, and the moment the sun sets. So the asking happens all day long, not once. The closing line turns her name into a request: make us full of her, here. Sāyaṇa reads 'here' as in this world and in the work of worship, so the trust is asked for inside the offering itself, not after it.
In a hot summer, a pot of basil on a balcony gets water at sunrise, again at noon, again at dusk. One soaking in the morning would not carry it to night. The hymn treats trust the same way: called fresh at each turn of the day, so it is still there when the offering is made.
