Vasudeva's Son, Devaki's Joy
Krishnashtakam 1
Meaning · English
I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world, the god who is Vasudeva's son, who overcame Kamsa and Chanura, the highest joy of Devaki.
The singer names Krishna through the people closest to him. He is called god, and also the son of Vasudeva, his father. He is the greatest joy of Devaki, his mother. He is the one who overcame Kamsa and Chanura, two strong opponents. Then the line arrives that the hymn keeps returning to: I bow to Krishna, teacher of the whole world. A family's child and the world's teacher sit in one breath, with nothing between them to explain the jump.
Picture a man at a wedding. One guest knows him as his father's son. Another knows him as the boy whose mother brightens when he walks in. A third remembers when he stood up to the strongest men in town. Same man, three introductions. The hymn introduces Krishna the same way: father, mother's joy, deed, then teacher of the world.
