Flax-Blue and Jewelled
Krishnashtakam 2
Meaning · English
Dark blue like the flax flower, bright with necklace and anklets, wearing jewelled bracelets and armbands: Krishna, teacher of the world, I bow to him.
The flax flower is a small bloom of deep blue, and Krishna's skin is that colour. Then the hymn goes over his ornaments one at a time: a necklace at his chest, anklets at his feet, bracelets set with gems at his wrists, bands around his upper arms. Nothing here is about what he did. It only looks at him. The last line does not change. The one being looked at so closely, from chest to ankle, is the same one bowed to as the world's teacher.
Think of meeting someone you love at a station after a long time apart. Your eyes move over them slowly: the coat, the scarf, the ring you once gave them. Nobody calls that inventory. The noticing is the affection. The hymn's careful list of necklace, anklets, bracelets and armbands is that same unhurried look.
