Curling Locks, Moonlit Face
Krishnashtakam 3
Meaning · English
Framed by curling locks, his face like the full moon, wearing earrings that flash and sway as he moves: Krishna, teacher of the world, I bow to him.
The hymn's gaze moves up from the jewels to the face. First the hair: curling locks falling loose around the forehead. Then the face itself, round and bright as a full moon. Then the earrings, which do more than hang. They shine and play, catching light each time he turns his head. The closing line is the same as before: the singer bows to Krishna, the world's teacher. A young man's face and the teacher of the whole world are named in one breath.
Picture a friend's face lit by a lamp at night, a stray curl across the forehead, small earrings swinging as they laugh and turn. Later you remember that face by the movement at its edges. The hymn paints Krishna the same way: a steady brightness at the centre, held by curling hair and flashing gold that never quite keeps still.
