Peacock Feather, Four Arms
Krishnashtakam 4
Meaning · English
Fragrant with the scent of coral-tree flowers, smiling a lovely smile, four-armed, a peacock feather crowning his head: to Krishna, teacher of the world, I bow.
The portrait moves on from his face to the rest of him. He smells of the coral-tree flower, a blossom the old stories grow in the gardens of heaven. His smile is easy and charming. He has four arms, the way Vishnu is shown in temple images. And at the crown of his head sits a peacock feather, the plain ornament of a cowherd boy. It closes as each verse does: I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world.
Picture a grandfather at a wedding in his best silk. In his buttonhole is the paper flower a small grandchild made for him that morning. He looks no less grand for it, only closer. The four arms are the silk, and the peacock feather is the paper flower. One figure wears both without strain.
